In many cases, individuals may choose not to go to a hospital or to law enforcement for a forensic examination. The DNA Kit is a self-administered DNA testing kit. Users receive a laboratory report, and an example report is available online. Individuals who have experienced sexual assault are advised to seek care at a hospital or sexual assault resource center, as forensic examinations performed by trained professionals are recognized as reliable and admissible in court. The collection, handling, or storage of any DNA sample, including self-collected samples, may be challenged in legal proceedings.
Laboratory Testing
All laboratory analysis is performed by an independent, certified partner laboratory. Information about which sample types are tested, any applicable laboratory fees, and the potential for sample retention for further processing is provided before testing begins.
Test Results and Access
Users receive their results directly from the partner laboratory. Information regarding the contents of the laboratory report and the process for securely accessing results is available in the Instruction Manual and on this website.
An example of a laboratory test result is available [here] (link). This example shows the type of information a user may receive and explains the meaning of each result category.
Guidance for Survivors
Individuals who have experienced sexual assault are encouraged to seek medical care at a hospital or sexual assault resource center for treatment and a forensic examination.
Evidence collected by trained professionals during a forensic examination has an established record of reliability, relevance, and admissibility in court.
